Despite cloudy skies and drizzle, people lined the streets Sunday as the Irish American Club of Johnson County and the Shawnee St. Patrick’s Parade Committee hosted the 28th Annual Shawnee St. Patrick’s Parade.
The parade, with the theme "Go The Green Mile For A Big Irish Smile," traveled along Johnson Drive through downtown Shawnee. The parade featured dozens of entries from businesses, community groups and organizations, schools and dance groups.

Johnson County K-State Research and Extension, 11811 S. Sunset Drive, Olathe, offers Strong People orientation at 11 a.m. for participants age 70 and older to complete a summary information sheet, medical history, current health survey and informed consent form in preparation for the series, held April 1 through June 22. The classes are from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Learn nine exercises that increase strength, muscle mass, improve balance, flexibility, bone and joint health, and sense of well-being. Curves locations will collect non-perishable items and monetary donations for food banks in the Kansas City area.
Members who donate a bag of groceries or make a minimum $30 donation in March will receive a reusable Curves grocery freezer bag. Non-members who make a minimum $30 donation through March 20 can join Curves for free.

Chef Matt Chatfield, from the Culinary Center of Kansas City, Overland Park, garnered top honors at the Taste of Elegance culinary competition held Feb. 23 at the Overland Park Marriott.
His winning entrée, Roast Pork Rack with Apricot Glaze, earned him the $1,000 prize and an invitation to compete in the national Taste of Elegance competition.

At 54 pieces and 15 artists, the March gallery show featuring fabric art from the Fractured Fabric Society at Lenexa City Hall, 12350 W. 87th St., is the largest undertaken by the Lenexa Arts Council.
The society is an art-quilting guild whose members reside throughout the Kansas City metro area. The event is presented in honor of Women’s History Month.
Hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and on evenings when the building is open for City Council meetings.
