“Freedom is hearing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ and getting all choked up, seeing someone proudly wearing their veteran’s hat and being proud of your husband who serves in the Navy Reserves and your brother who serves in the Air Force Reserves as well as their communities by being in law enforcement."

Vicki Turnbow, president, Raytown Area

Chamber of Commerce

“Freedom is costly — It requires sacrifice. We must not be cynical, short-sighted, selfish and above all, we must be tolerant. This great bargain we enjoy cannot be maintained passively and without much effort. Some have paid with their life, more have paid with hard work and determination, and many of us are fortunate enough merely to pay with some portion of what is in our wallet.

“We are all concerned about the high cost of living — utilities, mortgage, credit cards, food, gas, etc. These are all costs of freedom. On this patriotic holiday, honor in your heart, in your mind and in your actions what our country stands for. Be proud, pleased and grateful to pay for the high cost of freedom.”

Al Brown, executive director,

Raytown Emergency Assistance Program

“Freedom is a rainbow of faces in my room, a book of any genre in my hand, a pair of tennis shoes to play kickball during recess, a different church to worship in each weekend, or a comfy bed to sleep in instead.”

Christi Stringer, fifth-grade teacher

“Freedom is when you are stuck and you get out. That’s freedom.”

Tyler Rinas, first grade

“Freedom is about being able to do what you want. It’s about not having to be a slave anymore. It’s about coming to America.”

Brianna Johnson, second grade

“Freedom is a way of life. If people aren’t free, they won’t be able to do anything about it if people start to boss them around. It is powerful. You can do stuff, but it can’t be over-the-top.

You have to be responsible for having freedom.

It is life.”

Maxine Nwachukwu, fourth grade

“Freedom is the ability for any person to dream about what they think their life should be like, find that path, walk that path, and never take for granted where that path will lead them or those that have helped them along the way.”

Dr. Allan Markley, Raytown schools superintendent

“Freedom is … the right to free speech, the right to worship as we choose, the right to pursue our chosen profession, the right to raise our family as we choose, the right to an education, and the privilege to freely engage in our political system.

“I am proud to be the mayor of this great city, and I am very thankful for the courage and sacrifices made by the men and women dedicated to preserving our countries freedom.”

David Bower, mayor of Raytown
