Shawnee Mission South is one of three high schools nationally to be named a finalist in the science division of the Intel Schools of Distinction Awards. The annual program honors schools for innovative math and science programs.

As a finalist, South receives a $2,500 grant. If selected, South would receive an additional $7,500 grant from the Intel Foundation and an award package including curriculum materials, professional development resources, and hardware and software sponsored by Dell Computers, eInstruction and SMART Technologies.

Competing with South for the high school science prize are McLean High School in McLean, Va., and Townsend Harris High School in Flushing, N.Y.

The winning high school will compete against elementary and middle schools. One school among six schools in the math and science division will be named “Star Innovator” and receive an additional $15,000 grant and other products and services, bringing the total value of the top award to more than $200,000.

To win, a school must deliver a comprehensive math or science program that incorporates both innovation and effective use of technology. The program must work to involve parents and community members, foster professional development and teamwork, and deliver high academic achievement.
