For their performances at the Baker University cheerleading camp, the Paola High School varsity and junior varsity squads won six trophies, two special awards and two spirit sticks.

Mikaila Barbour, Paige Gochenour, Alyshia McKinney and Taylor Smith were selected all-stars.

All of the cheerleaders represented Paola extremely well, Paola coach Lisa Collier said.

“These girls worked very hard over those four days, and I am so proud of them,” Collier said. “They were very deserving of these awards.”

Nine squads from Kansas and Missouri attended the week-long camp held June 10 to 13.

The camp, conducted at Baker University in Baldwin City, was sponsored by the Universal Cheerleaders Association.

Paola Panther varsity cheerleaders brought home five trophies and two awards.

The squad placed first in the Xtreme Routine category, first in the Home Pom Routine, second in the cheer competition and an overall superior trophy for receiving multiple blue ribbons throughout the week.

The Panthers were chosen for the Leadership Award and the Traditons Award. The leadership award is voted on by all of the squads at the camp.

Varsity cheerleaders for the Paola Panthers are Lauren Bandyk, Lyndsey Bandyk, Mikaila Barbour, Sarah Berner, Paige Gochenour, Abbey Henn, Hailey Jones, Keri Kluge, Alyshia McKinney, Sydney Peterson, Paige Queen, Natalie Scroggie, Taylor Smith, Hillary Watrous and Amanda Zirkle.

The junior varsity squad received a trophy for being selected one of the most improved groups during the camp.

Both squads won spirit sticks during the week, presented to teams showing the most spirit.

Junior varsity cheerleaders are Bailey Barney, Bri Berner, Lizzie Berckfeldt, Kali Blanc, Brenna Brocker, Emma Dixon, Conner Karigan and Joyce Pursley.

Varsity cheerleaders Barbour, Gochenour, McKinney and Smith competed in the all-star competition and were selected to the camp all-star team.

All-star cheerleaders are invited to cheer in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade or go to London, England for a parade.

Paola High School cheerleading squads are coached by Lisa Collier and Michelle Clary. Collier is the varsity coach. Clary assists with the varsity and coaches the junior varsity squad.
