Yo-Ho! Pirates sail past Wildcats
Pirates win LARA 8-and-under title, stay undefeated
By Andy Brown, andybrown@miconews.com
The Pirates found the treasure they were looking for in Sunday’s Louisburg Area Recreation Association 8-and-under championship baseball game.
What was the treasure exactly? The Pirates’ bounty included 13 first-place trophies and an undefeated season to boot after beating the Wildcats 15-3 and ending their year 14-0.
The Wildcats nearly took the treasure from the Pirates in Saturday’s semifinals. The Wildcats took a nine-run lead early in the game, but the Pirates responded for 14 runs in two innings to steal the win and hold the advantage in the double-elimination tournament.
“The kids did an awesome job all year,” Pirates coach Bruce Caldwell. “They did everything we asked them to do. I told them I wouldn’t have drafted a different team if I had the chance. To come back the way they did in the semifinal game was pretty special.”
The Pirates had hits in every inning and two big hits from Logan McClellan and Frankie Hurst. Both McClellan and Hurst hit home runs, but for Hurst, it was nothing new.
That last home run for Hurst was his 13th of the season, which easily led the league. Hurst had team-high three hits, as did Parker Harmon.
McClellan, Sean Hastings and Kyle Allen each finished with two hits a piece, while Garrett Caldwell, Dalton Ribordy and Braden O’Brien each added a hit to the Pirate cause.
Trevor Leach, Desmond Doles, Noah Larson and Joseph Allen all had hits to help the Wildcat (11-4) offense.
Members of the championship Pirates are Logan McClellan, Sean Hastings, Garrett Caldwell, Frankie Hurst, Parker Harmon, Kyle Allen, Dalton Ribordy, Kai Tinich, Braden O’Brien, Parker Perentis, Kristoffer Aye and coaches Bruce Caldwell and George Hurst.
Members of the Wildcats are Trevor Leach, Noah Oberg, Joseph Allen, Desmond Doles, JonPaul Totta, Ambrose Stefan, Eli Minster, Will Ridley, Alex Stephens, Noah Larson, Alex Billingsley, Tyler Mathews and coach Jimmy Allen.
