Bernard John DeGrande
1925-2008
Bernard J. (B.J.) DeGrande, 82, Paola, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008.
He was born Oct. 24, 1925, in Lenexa to Charles and Anna Zohner DeGrande. He married Mary Frances Thompson on Feb. 11, 1950, in Lenexa.
He attended Holy Trinity Elementary School in Lenexa. He graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1944. He joined the Navy after high school and served on a minesweeper for two years.
He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Paola, and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the American Legion Post 156, Paola. He served on the Miami County Board of Realty. He was a past member of Soil Conservation for 21 years and served on the Rural Water District No. 2, Farm Bureau, and as a 4-H leader.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary DeGrande, who died May 22, 2008, and two infant great-grandsons.
He is survived by two sons, Carl DeGrande and David DeGrande of Paola; two daughters, Joyce Smith of Paola and Patty Wiseman of Baldwin City; a sister, Jane Scherman of Shawnee; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Rosary will be at 6 p.m. today at the Holy Trinity Church, with visitation from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS 66071, 294-2372.
