Bakers should get their kitchens ready.

One apple pie will be named the best in town at the second-annual Louisburg Freedom Fest apple pie contest July 4.

The pie contest is part of Freedom Fest’s night of activities, which will include food, fun for the kids, music and fireworks after dark at Lewis-Young Park. Activities start at 5:30 p.m.

Sponsored by Sen. Pat Apple and his wife, Debbie, the apple pie contest will benefit the Friends of the Louisburg Library.

Pies are to be checked in at Lewis-Young between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., and judging begins at 6:30.

There is no entry fee, but contestants must be between age 14 and 114, according to contest rules.

Any apple pie will be accepted, from a standard two-crust pie to pies with other ingredients added; however apple crisps and apple tarts are not eligible. Commercial, bakery and boxed pies will not be accepted.

Pies should arrive in ready-to-eat condition, and should be wrapped or in covered non-returnable pie tins. Do not put your name or any other form of identification on the pie or pie tin.

All pies entered in the contest will be judged by a panel based on taste, texture and appearance. Ribbons will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners.

Winners will be announced by 8:30 p.m. at the stage area. After the contest is over, slices of the pies will be sold.

In addition to the apple pie contest, the Freedom Fest committee has arranged for many other family-friendly activities.

The Middle Creek Band will provide the free musical entertainment for the celebration, which begins at 5:30 p.m.

A kiddie tractor pull is a new event this year, and the Louisburg American Legion John P. Hand Post No. 250 will be running the kiddie trains. Kids can also let out some energy at the inflatables, such as a moon walk and obstacle course.

Other events available for families to enjoy include free cotton candy sponsored by New Life Family Church; free watermelon, sponsored by the Louisburg Lions Club; tattoos for kids, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce; and a drawing for six reconditioned bicycles, sponsored by the Lions Club.

Organizer Collyn Peterson said he hopes the community gathers to enjoy the celebration before the fireworks, which start at dark, which is usually between 9 and 9:30 p.m., he said. Louisburg firefighters will be the masters of ceremonies, setting off the fireworks display.
