One Louisburg High School senior recently returned from a week-long government and leadership program with new experiences and a wealth of knowledge.

Alexander Lathrop, who will be a senior at LHS this fall, was one of nearly 500 boys who attended the American Legion Boys State of Kansas held June 1-7 at Kansas State University in Manhattan.

During the program, Lathrop was a member of the city of Spigarelli in Powell County, and he held the position of Commission on Ethics and Good Government.

Throughout the week, Lathrop was able to hear Greg Orman, an entrepreneur and former owner of Environmental Lighting Concepts, speak, as well as Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh, Kansas Court of Appeals Judge G. Joseph Pierron Jr. and former U.S. Rep Jim Slattery.

Delegates are sponsored by American Legion posts from around Kansas, and demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities in student government, athletics or other activities. They are nominated by school counselors and other influential people in their lives.

Boys State was founded by the American Legion in 1935 in the state of Illinois to promote and teach the ideals of democracy. The first session of Kansas Boys State was held in 1937 at Wichita University. Each year, two delegates from each state are selected to attend Boys Nation, held annually in Washington, D.C.

Nominations for next year’s session can be submitted online at the Kansas Boys State Web site, www.ksbstate.org.
