Before the Blue Valley High School football Tigers take their first steps on to the field for the 2010 season, points already have been scored for continuity within this storied program with the announcement late last week that longtime Tigers varsity assistant and ex-Blue Valley footballer Eric Driskell will serve as the Tigers’ new head football coach.
On Rampy’s watch, the Tigers captured state championships in 1991, 1998, 2003 and 2006. On four other occasions, Rampy teams finished state runner-up. In each of his final two seasons, the Tigers advanced to the sub-state (semifinal) round of state in Class 6A. “I feel that it is a great honor to be entrusted with the responsibility of carrying on the tradition of Tiger football,” said Driskell, who played for the Tigers from 1988 to 1991 and was a member of the school’s first state-championship team in 1991. “I am unbelievably excited about the opportunity to work with our dedicated players in my new role.” Driskell, a 1992 graduate of Blue Valley, played for Baker University from 1992 through 1995, lettering four years and serving as a team captain for the Wildcats in 1995.He has spent the past 14 years coaching football at Blue Valley. He coached the school’s football freshmen in 1996 and 1997, the sophomores in 1998 and has served as a varsity assistant and offensive line coach from 1999 through this past autumn. Meanwhile, he served as the Tigers football junior varsity’s head coach and offensive coordinator from 2000 through the 2009 campaign. Driskell, who teaches biology, field biology and zoology at Blue Valley, also serves as the school’s head boys track and field coach. “Coach Eric Driskell is a graduate of Blue Valley High School and lives in Stilwell,” Blue Valley athletic director Bob Whitehead said. “This background, his football knowledge, positive relationship with our athletes and coaching staff will enable Eric to continue the tradition of excellence at Blue Valley.”
