Former Kansas Attorney General Robert (Bob) Londerholm has indicated he intends to seek the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by gubernatorial candidate Sam Brownback.

Londerholm, 78, Overland Park, was a two-term Kansas attorney general from 1965 to 1969. He joins U.S. Reps. Jerry Moran and Todd Tiahrt in the Republican race for Brownback’s Senate seat.

Londerholm, a retired attorney, said he is concerned with the national debt and what that will mean financially to future generations.

“I’m visiting my grandkids and I’m thinking more and more about what kind of a burden we’re putting on them,” he said. “I’m wondering what’s going to land on their head when they get older.

“I was born during the Depression and grew up during World War II and we were told to make do with less, and it seems like there’s a lot of talk about holding down government, and I’ve heard it since the ’50s but it doesn’t seem like it ever comes true. We keep mounting more debt and more debt.”

Running for either the Senate or for the 3rd District congressional seat, Londerholm said, was a “toss up.”

“The Senate is for people with a lot of experience,” he said. “I realize there are two incumbent congressmen running with huge war chests. Realistically I’m starting out way back in the pack and it will be an uphill fight.

“I haven’t started fundraising; I plan to do it at a low pace and set a low budget.”
