Price Chopper starts relief fund

Price Chopper has launched a Disaster Relief Fund to benefit The American Red Cross’ efforts in Haiti. Each of the metro area’s 49 Price Chopper stores will have donation tear pads at checkout. Shoppers can add a $1, $5 or $10 donation to their grocery totals. All money raised will go to the American Red Cross’ relief efforts in Haiti as that island nation recovers from the Jan. 12 earthquake.
“The last time Price Chopper implemented its Disaster Relief program was fall 2008 to assist the Red Cross’ relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike,” said Price Chopper spokesperson Jody Hanson. “In one month, our customers raised more than $40,000. We appreciate the generosity of Kansas City and are pleased to provide a very convenient way to make a donation toward relief efforts in Haiti.”

Green Lantern to help Heart to Heart efforts

Heart to Heart International Inc., based in Olathe, has announced that Green Lantern Car Washes will support the organization’s relief efforts in Haiti through a matching-gift campaign. The company said it will match customer and employee donations dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000 at each of its locations in the Kansas City, Wichita and St. Louis metro areas through Jan. 31.
With five locations, the donation drive has the potential of adding $100,000 to Heart to Heart’s crisis response in Haiti.
Kansas City area locations are in Liberty and Olathe.

Youthfront addresses hunger relief

Youthfront, a faith-based youth organization based in Westwood, is calling on area youth groups and congregations to help package 200,000 meals to send to Haiti. The organization is mobilizing teams of young people and their parents to assemble and package meals on Jan. 23, 24, 27, 30 and 31 at its office at 4715 Westwood.

Youthfront’s auditorium has the capacity for up to 400 people to package 45,000 meals per hour.

As the first wave of relief is arriving in Haiti to meet its most urgent needs, Youthfront and its distribution partners in Haiti are preparing to send a secondary tier of aid. This will more efficiently reach the most vulnerable people after the current relief efforts resolve the initial distribution bottlenecks. This second tier of aid will help address the continuing hunger that will persist during the next critical weeks and months.

As a result of Youthfront’s partnerships and financial support that cover overhead costs, the cost is 20 cents per meal. Individuals and groups are asked to pay for the number of meals they wish to package.

For a $30 donation, one student can package 150 meals in about one hour.

Youthfront is distributing its first shipment through Touch Global, the crisis response arm of the Evangelical Free Church of America.

Organizations are encouraged to pre-register on Youthfront’s Web site, www.youthfront.com in order to avoid over-booking. Dates and hours are:

Jan. 23 – 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Jan. 24 – 1 to 8 p.m.

Jan. 27 – 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Jan. 30 – 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Jan. 31 – 1 to 8 p.m.

Groups can request alternate dates to package meals by contacting Kendon McBee at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Donations can be made on the Youthfront Web site, www.youthfront.com; by mailing checks to Youthfront, 4715 Rainbow Blvd., Shawnee Mission, KS 66205, indicate Feed the Hunger on the memo line; or by calling (913) 262-1782.
