The top 24 award winners in the 13th Annual Metro High School Visual Arts Competition were announced Dec. 3 during the opening night reception at the Irene B. French Community Center Gallery of Art, 5701 Merriam Drive, Merriam. A total of 635 works were submitted by 357 students from 22 metro-area high schools and 147 works were accepted to show in the gallery. Johnson County winners are: • Three-Dimensional Second place – Fragmented Hand w/Shadow by Crystal Bell, De Soto Third place – Three Brown Bottles by Jack Wallace, Shawnee Mission North Honorable Mention – Cup by Chris Burke, Olathe North • Computer-Generated First place – Industrial Wasteland by Dalton Thompson, De Soto Third place – Restoring Light by Maggie McLandsborough, Olathe East Honorable Mention – Leaving Autumn by Hillary Schneider, Olathe East; and Where Do I Begin and End by Johanna Laughrey, Kansas School for the Deaf • Photography Second place – Venetian Decay by Haley Mills, De Soto Honorable Mention – Shuttlecock Push by Mary Rodebaugh, Shawnee Mission North; Pigmented Water Study by Tyler Dutton, De Soto; and Infinity Bridge by Katie Rempala, Olathe North • Two-Dimensional First place – Thought & Dreams by Anna Strickland, Olathe North The artwork will be on display until Dec. 26.
