Holy Cross Advent events

An intergenerational Advent event with Holden Evening Vespers, holiday treats and craft projects starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 7851 W. 119th St., Overland Park.

A women’s Advent gathering is from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. The event includes an ice-breaker, devotion, Christmas treats and door prizes. Band performs at Atonement

The Overland Park Civic Band performs a holiday concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3. at Atonement Lutheran Church, 9948 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, will feature seasonal music. Broadway show selections, band standards and marches. Gary Schutza, principal trumpet player with the Kansas City Symphony, will will perform a solo with the band.

 

Church Women United to meet at First Baptist

Church Women United of Johnson County will meet at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at the First Baptist Church of Overland Park, 8200 W. 96th St. Following registration and refreshments, women are invited to the annual meeting and the Human Rights Celebration. The 2009 theme “Seeking Shalom” focuses on peace in support of the many women and men who continue to inspire with their examples of working for peace in today’s world. Visitors are welcome. Southminster presents ‘Journey to Bethlehem’

Southminster Presbyterian Church, 63rd Street and Roe Avenue, Prairie Village, presents a “Journey to Bethlehem” from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, and from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5. The journey will be presented in small group, 20-minute tours.

The church transforms its entire facility into a series of scenes staged with costumed characters, music and drama. The story is centered on a woman who is soon to have a child and a man who is faced with a challenge to find a suitable place to lodge in Bethlehem. Olathe church Creche display

The Olathe Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 15915 W. 143rd St., Olathe, will host a Crèche display from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, and 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6.

At 7 p.m. Sunday, the event will be accompanied by a Christmas broadcast of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir with messages from the church’s First Presidency. Members of the general public are invited to attend. The events are free. For information, call (816) 235-2436.

 

Birthday party for Jesus

A Birthday Party for Jesus is from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 5, at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 95th Street and Switzer, Overland Park. Parents are invited to drop off their children age 3 to 8 for a few hours of fun while finishing up their Christmas shopping. The event is free. For details, call 492-9740.

 

Red Bag event for charity

The Sixth Annual Red Bag Silent and Live Auction to benefit Christmas Families is from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 21515 W. 101st St., Lenexa.

Christmas Families is an organization that was begun by Daniel Jacobs 26 years ago to provide gifts for families in the Kansas City area. Money raised will benefit more than 1,500 children and adults who otherwise would receive nothing for Christmas.

Church presents musical

Church hosts family Advent activities

Presbyterian Church of Stanley, 14895 Antioch Road, Overland Park, will host a free family Advent event, “A Simple Gift,” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6.

There will be crafts, cookies, hot chocolate and carol singing. The Christmas story will be re-enacted. A donation of new underwear in all sizes, to benefit Grace United Communities Ministries, would be accepted. Hand-painted bowls created by the church’s Kids Care Club group will be auctioned. AIDS exhibit at Life church

“World Vision Experience: AIDS – Step Into Africa” is a multimedia, interactive exhibit that allows visitors to step into the lives of children affected by HIV and AIDS.

The exhibit comes to Life Church, 16111 S. Lone Elm Road, Olathe, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 6-8 and 13, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 9-12. The exhibit features a 2,500-square-foot replica of an African village. Visitors can experience the effects of the pandemic as they listen to a personal audio track relating the stories of four real children in the hardest-hit region of the world.
