Developers of the mixed-use Mission Farms and Highlands Village projects north of Interstate 435 and Mission Road financed the $8.5 million construction of the bridge and the extension of Indian Creek Parkway, or 106th Street. It is not common for a developer to pay for a bridge on a public street, but extension of the street and construction of the span were needed to provide better access between the developments and the interstate. No interchange exists at Mission Road, but people now can more easily reach Mission Farms by taking the Roe exit and then heading east on the parkway.
Developers Grubb & Ellis/The Winbury Group coordinated efforts with the city because the city has been constructing a $3 million storm drainage and flood control project along nearby Indian Creek. Fill material excavated for the flood control work was put to use on the road and bridge project. Overland Park Public Works Director Doug Brown said that saved the city hauling and disposal costs and saved the developer the cost of purchasing fill material from another source. More mixed-use projects are under development along Indian Creek Parkway west of Roe Avenue. That extension of the parkway is scheduled for opening in March. Mission Farms already is open on the east side of Mission Road in Leawood. Mission Farms West and the related Highlands Village project on the west side are under development. Those projects are to include a mix of office, retail and residential properties. Shafer Kline & Warren were the designers of the road and bridge project, and Clarkson Construction Co. served as general contractor.

A new bridge is opening soon that will provide an added link between Roe Avenue and Mission Road.
