The idea for the Local Shopping Network, a new offering from Sun Broadcasting, was formed in a living room.

“My wife is addicted to television shopping shows. I saw how audiences are attracted to these shows for the wonderful savings and I thought we can do this on a local level,” said Local Shopping Network Executive Producer David Small.

“We could bring special savings, almost like a club, to our viewers and our readers so they feel they are part of something special in getting tremendous savings by hooking up with local merchants and local service companies. Thus was born the Local Shopping Network.”

Small said the show is not so different from the Sun’s print products.

“The Sun, since 1950, has been connecting readers with local merchants and local service companies. What we wanted to do was create another forum with a way for readers and viewers to get in contact with those companies and vice versa,” Small said. “We thought TV and online would be a good way to do that. So we are really not deviating from anything we have been doing since 1950, just catching up with the times and a new way to do things.”

Area mom-and-pop stores, other retailers, professionals such as Realtors, and service companies are invited to participate.

“We create a three-minute show all about them and give an intimate view into their store or into their products or services for greater Kansas City area viewers,” Small said. “And it’s all done at the local level.

“Frankly, we are in the publishing business, and we don’t have experience in video and we are learning as we go, but we have had tremendous support from our sister company, St. Joseph Cablevision, as well as a lot of help from Something Different Media, in getting this to be a quality product to be telecast throughout Kansas City.”

The first 60-minute show will begin airing Wednesday, Nov. 25 on Time Warner Cable and SureWest. Each new show will have a different theme.

“Our company is trying to diversify and bring as many options as possible to advertisers as well as audiences; that’s why we have created Sun Broadcasting,” Small said. “We are having a lot of fun putting all this together and developing a unique show.”
