“This has been years in planning,” said Bruce Priday, stake president, as he paid tribute to former stake presidents Don Deshler and David Hepworth for their role in bringing this project to fruition. The dedication was conducted as part of the semi-annual stake conference that included instruction and sermons, special music by the choir, and the dedicatory prayer. There are 25,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the greater Kansas City area, divided into seven stakes. The Lenexa Stake is comprised of about 3,500 members, organized into eight congregations. Six are in Johnson County and two are in Wyandotte County. The new Lenexa Kansas Stake Center will be the meeting place for the Lenexa congregation, in western Lenexa, and for the Indian Creek Ward, in north Olathe and southwest Overland Park. The new building also will be used for worship services, activities and cultural events. Construction on the building started May 1, 2008, and was completed Aug. 24, 2009. Vanum Construction, Kansas City, Kan., served as general contractor, and HMN and Associates, Overland Park, served as local architect. The facility has a chapel, cultural hall, offices, and 24 teaching stations that include three seminary rooms for teaching weekday early morning religious classes to high school-age students. The building has energy-efficient lighting with room sensors to turn off lights, and 23 energy-efficient heating and air conditioning systems. Outside landscaping features prairie grasses and bio-retention for cleaning storm water. The building sits on a 9.1-acre tract and is the second LDS church in Lenexa; the other was completed in 1994 at 79th Street and Allman Road.
