Church women to meet at Rolling Hills

Church Women United of Johnson County will meet at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church, 9300 Nall Ave., Overland Park.

Following registration and refreshments, women are invited to celebrate “Piecing Earth Together,” which will focus on the environment and how people are called to work together to be good stewards of the gifts of the earth.

Church Women United was founded in 1941 as an ecumenical movement involving Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox and other Christian women in the United States and Puerto Rico. Organized into 1,200 local and state units, CWU works for peace and social justice from a Christian basis, while supporting dialogue with all faith groups.

St. Mark’s offers flu shots

Free seasonal flu shots will be available during the Annual Health Fair from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 6422 Santa Fe, Overland Park.

KU School of Nursing will provide the following services: flu shots, blood sugar and blood pressure checks, vision and hearing exams, and cancer education.

Stilwell church to hold annual Fall Fest

Fall Fest is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. followed by a silent auction and chili supper from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Stilwell United Methodist Church, 19335 Metcalf Ave.

Fall Fest includes pumpkin decorating, and a bird presentation called “Awesome Birds” at 6:45 p.m. Birds will skate, shoot hoops and ride bikes.

The silent auction features sport lovers’ packages, theater tickets, gift cards and more. Proceeds benefit the church’s youth mission trip.

Admission is free for all events. A free will offering will be collected for the chili supper. For information, call 897-2101.

 

Guest lecturer at Kol Ami

Patrick Buckley presents a lecture recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, in the sanctuary of Congregation Kol Ami, 7501 Belinder Ave., Prairie Village

Buckley will present information in German and in English regarding influential German composers and poets. He will sing Mahler’s “Kinder-Totenlieder,” as well as compositions by Schubert, Schumann and Brahms.

Beth Shalom to host Festival of Faiths

The Festival of Faiths presents Eboo Patel, founder and executive director of Interfaith Youth Core, based in Chicago, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at Congregation Beth Shalom, 9400 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Mo.

Patel, an American Muslin from India, was appointed by President Obama to the Advisory Council of The White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Initiatives.

Patel, author of “Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslin, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation,” has been featured on NPR and CNN and in the Washington Post. His work builds on common faith values – service and religious freedom – to engage youth in interfaith projects.

Lenexa Veterans Day event at cemetery

The Rev. Peter Jaramillo, priest of the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kan., and military chaplain, will speak at the Veterans Day observance at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Resurrection Cemetery, 83rd Street and Quivira Road, Lenexa.

The American Legion Band will play patriotic music to prelude the ceremony at 1:30 p.m.  The ceremony will include a flag raising, music, veterans salute, a 21-gun salute and playing of Taps. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7397 will be the color guard.  Small flags will be available for gravesite decorations.

Veterans, family members and friends are invited to attend the flag-raising ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at the cemetery. The memorial features monuments and flags representing the five branches of the Armed Forces and the Merchant Marines. Family and friends can honor veterans by having their names engraved on the granite walls adjoining the monuments.
