Churches offer safe Halloween events Lenexa United Methodist Church, 9138 Caenen Lake Road, Lenexa, offers a Trunk or Treat event from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in the church parking lot. Families are invited to come in costume, and children can pick up treats from church members’ decorated cars. There also will be food for sale. Bethany Lutheran Church, 9101 Lamar Ave., Overland Park, holds a Fairy Tale Fall Fest for all ages in the Family Life Center and parking lot. The event is from 3 to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 31, and provides a safe place for children, youth and adults to have fun. Families are encouraged to wear costumes. Activities include trunk-or-treating from 3 to 4 p.m. for ages 1 to 18, free hayrides, a book and cake walk, giant marshmallow fight, human chain relay, games for teens and adults, free photo area, face painting, music, prizes and giveaways, caramel apples and snacks, costume contest, and prize for best decorated vehicle. Food items will be collected for local food pantry Good Shepherd Mission. For information, call 764-4166. Valley View United Methodist Church, 8412 W. 95th St., Overland Park, hosts a Trunk or Treat event from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. The event includes “good frights” and treats for all ages. The church also is holding a coat exchange. Attendees can donate, exchange and/or select coats for their family. Unselected coats will donated by the Valley View Youth Group to Bishop’s Round Up in November. For information, visit valleyviewumc.org.
Asbury to hold soup fest Asbury Women’s Annual Soup Fest takes place Thursday, Nov. 5 at Asbury United Methodist Church, 5400 Nall Ave., Prairie Village. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and dinner is available from 5 to 7 p.m. Adult meals are $8 for eat-in or carry-out, and kid meals for ages 12 and younger are $4. Meals include a bowl of homemade soup – chicken noodle, broccoli cheese, ham and bean, or baked potato; salad; bread; beverage; and dessert. Children can choose a small bowl of soup or a hot dog. Gourmet nuts and baked goods will be sold as well. Proceeds benefit world-wide United Methodist missions, as well as many local missions with which Asbury has direct involvement.
