A Prairie Village man seeking the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican and Kansas gubernatorial candidate Sam Brownback, said Thursday he hopes to break the “stranglehold” conservative Republicans have had in the Senate the past 70 years.

Charles Schollenberger, 57, made his announcement across the street from the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site in Topeka.

“Here in Topeka, people took a stand against segregated schools and it changed the nation,” he said. “These brave Kansans, like their forebears, who fought slavery before the Civil War, made a stand for justice and turned a situation of shame into a symbol of hope.

“Let us once again work to promote change: change for better schools, change for universal health coverage, change that protects our retirement funds, change that creates good jobs, clean industry, clean energy, and change that looks to the future.”

Schollenberger is a communications executive and former teacher and journalist/editor for the Hutchinson News, Kansas City Star, and Sun Newspapers of Johnson County.

He said Brownback and Pat Roberts, the state’s other U.S. Senator, are not attuned to the needs of working Kansans and neither are the two Republican Congressmen, Todd Tiahrt and Jerry Moran, who are seeking the GOP’s nomination to replace Brownback.

Schollenberger said he hopes Kansans will say 70 years is enough and vote for change in the U.S. Senate.

“I didn’t make my decision to seek this office lightly,” he said. “Everywhere we went people have been friendly and supportive and have welcomed our efforts. I believe that Kansas Democrats are looking for leadership from a candidate who is not afraid to get out among the people and wage a grassroots campaign.”

Schollenberger and his wife Jennifer have lived in Prairie Village for 19 years.
