Bishop Miege High School senior receiver and outside linebacker Justin McCay is The Sun’s Athlete of the Week.

altThe 6-4, 200-pound University of Oklahoma football commitment caught five passes for 166 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Stags’ 37-15 road win over Blue Valley West on Sept. 17. He also completed a 32-yard pass for a touchdown to classmate Trevor Releford in the victory.

Defensively, he recorded four solo tackles and two assists with one pass deflection. His 23 stops so far this season rank second on the Miege defense.

Heading into the Stags’ (2-1, 1-1) East Kansas League game Friday at home with Blue Valley Northwest (3-0, 1-0), the physical player and team captain for the Stags has 10 receptions for 240 yards and four TDs this young season. He also has averaged 14 yards per kickoff return in 2009.

A U.S. Army All-American and pre-season all-state selection this season by HovPen Sports and Rivals.com, McCay scored every five times he touched the football as a junior.

He was honored as a first-team All-Sun (receiver) and All-East Kansas League (wide receiver) following last season, when he racked up 31 receptions for 354 yards and four TDs and carried nine times for 243 yards and two TDs.

The senior entered the 2009 season as Scout.com’s No. 8-rated player in the Class of 2010, as well as its No. 1 outside linebacker. His college commitment to the Sooners followed scholarship offers from more than 30 Bowl Championship Series-level programs. His speed and athleticism make him a weapon every time he carries the ball offensively or tees off defensively.

In the win over Blue Valley West, “Justin played very well on both sides of the ball,” Bishop Miege coach Tim Grunhard said. “I think that he finally relaxed and played within himself. Justin at times tries to do too much and struggles. Against West, he did his job, and it showed.”
