Johnson County Community College, College Boulevard and Quivira Road, is taking suggestions from the community for ways to deal with budget shortfalls. Individuals can submit ideas for penny pinching to an electronic suggestion box on the college’s Web site.
The college recently reduced about $8.4 million from its 2009-10 budget, taking a 13 percent budget reduction from the state into account. On July 2, Gov. Mark Parkinson announced higher education would receive a further reduction, amounting to 2 percent.
Board of Trustees member Don Weiss suggested the college use a suggestion box after he saw a similar idea on another Web site, said Sue Kuder, executive assistant to the president and board.
The site, available for about two months, has averaged about three to five suggestions a week, Kuder, who oversees the site, said.
Recommendations have included reducing the number of publications on campus, turning lights and computers off, and setting printers and copiers to a double-sided print mode. These suggestions had already been implemented on campus.
“It’s such a new thing,” Kuder said. “We haven’t set up a hard and fast policy for how to deal with them yet. We just thought we’d see what kind of suggestions came from both inside and outside campus.”
Those who make suggestions receive a thank you for their submission and a note that says they will be notified if their suggestion is taken into account. No suggestions have been taken into account yet, Kuder said.
“They are good ideas, but nothing where we could say ‘OK, let’s do that tomorrow,’” she said.
The saving suggestion link will likely remain on the college homepage for about a month, Kuder said.
Those interested can post their suggestions by using the link “saving suggestions” on http://www.jccc.edu/index.html.
