Fifth-grader Megan Dunn took the assignment seriously. When asked to create a poster at Benninghoven Elementary School in Shawnee about electrical safety, she wanted to create an image people would take to heart. Megan’s poster won the 2009 Safety Billboard Contest sponsored by Kansas City Power & Light and Lamar Advertising Co. With crayon and markers, Megan created a comic design of a girl who is shocked by an electrical outlet. The message on her drawing is, “Touching outlets is a big no no.” “I hope people remember that you shouldn’t mess with electricity without help and without knowing what you are doing because then you get electrocuted,” Megan said. “It is very dangerous and you could die from being hurt like that.” Megan’s drawing was selected from among hundreds of submissions from throughout the Kansas City area. “At KCP&L, safety is a top priority,” Bill Herdegen, vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations at KCP&L, said in a statement. “Megan’s message of outlet safety is one of the important messages we emphasize with children. Tools like this contest help KCP&L educate the community, especially youth, about the hazards of working and playing around with electricity.” Megan said she thought about her idea for a few days before completing her drawing. Megan said she thought about her idea for a few days before completing her drawing. The girl in the drawing is modeled after Megan and her friends. The background is lime green, Megan’s favorite color. “I thought it would be cool to do something a little funny,” Megan said. “I thought if I did win I wanted people to remember it and I thought if I made it something sort of funny that maybe they would remember it a little more.” Megan said she worked with her parents to keep her younger sister Ginny, 7, away from electrical outlets when she was younger. Megan wins $100 and her drawing has been placed on several electronic billboards throughout the Kansas City area. Recently her family went for a drive to see her winning artwork on display, she said. “It was really exciting,” Megan said. “I didn’t think it would be that fun just seeing my name up there and the picture I drew in January.” This is the 27th year of the contest. Other Johnson County winners include: From Benninghoven Elementary, first prize, Joe Bultman, second grade, Audrey Gleason, sixth grade; honorable mention, Tasha Kostelac, first grade, Lindi Peterson, second grade, Becky Lin, second grade, Makynze Steele, fifth grade. From Sunflower Elementary, honorable mention, Nadia Rowe, fifth grade, and Shannon Moore, fifth grade. From Stanley Elementary, first prize, Mady Fast, fourth grade.
