lake.quivira.jonesOnce every five years, Lake Quivira hosts a homes tour. This year, eight unique designs will be featured in the tour, "Cottages to Castles: Quivira Homes That Tell a Story."

The self-guided tour begins any time between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday, June 6. A gourmet luncheon buffet will be served in the Lake Quivira clubhouse from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A Garden Boutique in the Clubhouse will be open to the public.

Tickets can be purchased at the Shawnee locations of Family Tree Nursery and One Stop Decorating Shop as well as Wild Birds Unlimited, 7347 Quivira Road, and Hy-Vee at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Pflumm Road. For more information, call 268-1439.

Homes on the Lake Quivira tour include Steve and Peggy Hughes' cottage tree house, 325 Kaw Lane East. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's California architecture, signature characteristics include a striking slip form rock, compound angle roof with large overhangs and the way the home is designed to fade into the hill.

and Charles Casteel's 1930s lakeside cottage at 272 Lakeshore West has been completely renovated in the traditional cottage style with the concept of preserving as much of the original home's footprint and materials as possible.
and Randy Treas' house at 106 Terrace Trail South was built in 1966 as a reverse ranch. It has undergone three renovations, most recently in 2002. Featured in 2005 in Kansas City Homes and Gardens, the home's architecture and décor is inspired by the Northwest.
and Barb Prater's home at 328 Mojave West, built in 2000, was inspired by a stay at a French chateau. It follows the French tradition of repurposing, reusing, recovering and repainting furniture.
and Cherie Roellchen's multi-level English Tudor house at 470 Navajo West features a fully remodeled kitchen and master bath. The great room and dining room overlook three acres of private wooded property.
and Susan Jones' multi-level prairie-inspired home at 233 Apache Trail is designed for entertaining. Highlights include a collection of artwork, an infinity pool, wine cellar, elevator and smart home features.
and Susan Wiens' one-of-a-kind home at 148 Lakeshore Drive West is constructed primarily of concrete. Chiseled into a hillside, it is a contemporary earth-contact home complete with a cave, a 28-foot atrium with an indoor hot tub, a bedroom loft, multiple skylights and interior glass throughout.
and Gayle Best's remodeled 1930s home at 375 Terrace Trail West blends new and old spaces to create a modern, comfortable home while maintaining the charm of the original house.
