With a goal of raising $95,000, hundreds of volunteers, including young cancer survivors and their parents, will be at area Hy-Vee stores from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 5-6 to sell lemonade. All proceeds will benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer. The Kansas City regional effort, known as a "Grand Stand," is the second largest Alex's Lemonade Stand fundraiser in the United States. Since the local effort began in 2004, more than $315,000 has been raised. Proceeds have gone to medical and nursing childhood cancer research grants at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., and the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. Each year, more than 12,500 children and adolescents in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer. This is the equivalent of two school classrooms each day.
