Week Eight brings critical district matchups to forefront

districtThe first week of the district playoffs are over for the Sun Country high school football teams.
The teams that won in the first week have a leg up on making the state playoffs, while the losers need to win two in a row to make it to state.
The schedule for the second week features two games on Thursday, one on Saturday afternoon and the rest of the schools playing on Friday.
All the Thursday and Friday games are set for 7 p.m. kickoffs with the Saturday game between Bishop Miege and St. James Academy at Bonner Springs slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Here is a look at the districts involving Sun Country schools and the games for Week Seven:

Class 6A
District 1
Shawnee Mission West (7-0, 1-0) and SM East (3-4, 1-0) are leading in this district.
SM East meets SM Northwest (5-2, 0-1) Thursday at the Shawnee Mission District North Stadium.
The Cougars need a win to keep their hopes alive of making the state playoffs.
Unbeaten SM West meets SM North (3-4, 0-1) on Friday at the SM District North Stadium.
The Vikings are 5-0 in Sunflower League play and with two more victories can claim at least a share of the league crown as well as a state playoff berth.
District 2
Undefeated Olathe East (7-0, 1-0) and Blue Valley North (1-0, 3-4) are tied for the district lead.
The two play Friday at the Blue Valley District Activities Complex.
In the other game, BV Northwest (0-7, 0-1) meets SM South (1-6, 0-1) at the Shawnee Mission District South Stadium.
District 3
Blue Valley (6-1, 1-0) and Olathe South (3-4, 1-0) are the leaders in this district.
The two teams meet Friday at Blue Valley. Blue Valley comes in fresh off an emotional 42-41 win over Olathe North and has a big rivalry game with BV West upcoming on Oct. 31.
The other game features BV West (5-2, 0-1) tangling with Olathe North (5-2, 0-1) at the Olathe District Activity Center.

Class 5A
District 4
Unbeaten Gardner-Edgerton (7-0, 1-0) and St. Thomas Aquinas (6-1, 1-0) lead this district.
Gardner-Edgerton beat Pittsburg 35-0 on Friday and the Trailblazers travel to St. Thomas Aquinas Friday.
The winner will have a big advantage in the race to a state playoff berth.
In the other game, Pittsburg (5-2, 0-1) travels to Ottawa (0-7, 0-1)

Class 4A
District 3
Bishop Miege (3-4, 1-0) and De Soto (3-4, 1-0) lead this district.
The Stags had no trouble in turning back Spring Hill 41-7 Friday.
The Stags meet St. James Academy (4-3, 0-1) Saturday afternoon at Bonner Springs. The kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
De Soto entertains Spring Hill (2-5, 0-1) Friday.
